Darnell Shakespeare
Founder, Artistic Director & CEO
Darnell Shakespeare is a director, producer, and arts leader with over a decade of experience working across some of London’s leading cultural institutions, including Theatre Royal Stratford East, English National Opera, and the National Theatre.
As the Founder and Artistic Director of East London Theatre School, Darnell leads the organisation’s vision to create accessible, high-quality performing arts training for young people from diverse backgrounds. His work is driven by a clear mission: to bridge the gap between community arts and professional opportunities, ensuring that talent is not limited by access.
Throughout his career, he has led large-scale productions, youth programmes, and cultural festivals, combining creative direction with strategic leadership. His experience spans directing, producing, partnership development, and working collaboratively with schools, local authorities, and industry professionals to create meaningful opportunities for young people.
Darnell’s approach is rooted in both artistic excellence and social impact. He has built programmes that not only develop performance skills, but also support confidence, identity, and long-term progression into education and the creative industries.
He holds a First Class BA (Hons) in International Drama and Performance from Columbia College Chicago and is Level 3 Safeguarding trained, ensuring all work with young people is delivered in safe, inclusive, and supportive environments.
Through East London Theatre School, Darnell is building a platform that empowers the next generation of artists — creating pathways, raising standards, and redefining who gets access to the arts.
